Second flush

(If you were looking for the giveaway, you will find it here.)

Yesterday I wrote about the last knockings in the garden, the signs that things are slowing down, and harvest coming to and end.

Today I want to show you a tiny little bit of new growth, a second season which has happened so quickly that it seems like magic.

A week or so ago we cleared the dead marigolds and nasturtiums from the big tub in front of the house (known as the ram raid box to the chaps in my life - how unkind of them). The princess and I saw small nasturtium seeds sitting on the surface of the soil amongst the chips of gravel and we laughed and pushed them just below the surface with our fingers.

And lo and behold! (It's been a while since I have done some lo and beholding - all is not lost.) Tiny new nasturtium plants have germinated astonishingly quickly - the green fuse lit by the touchpaper of our hands.

I wonder if we will get any flowers before the weather closes in . . .

Maybe they know so something we don't know, like we are going to have a wonderful Indian summer in the next few weeks, can but hope!x

I suppose it will depend upon the weather won't it. The weather has been warm enough for germination so you never know.

Oh yes, happy surprises in the garden! I just found some silly cosmos that have seemingly popped up overnight. We have been having unseasonably warm weather this week, I wonder what else might sprout to life.

Nature is amazing isn't it? Do hope the little dears are not cut off before they get started if we get a chilly spell.

If the frost stays away you might indeed get flowers, I love it when plants self seed and it is their decision where they will grow.

With a wee bit of sun I'm sure a flower or two shall appear, if not you could put them in a pot to finish in a windowsill...
Have a wonderful weekend.

Maybe it is Nature being optimistic. Fingers crossed. Nasturtiums are amazing plants. They spread so quickly. My greenhouse is suddenly awash with them. Next year, I'm planting tagetes as my companion plants.

What a precious gift! I found some self-seeded marigolds a week or two back and they're just beginning to flower. I'm absurdly proud of them though I did nothing to make them grow.

How nice to see something fresh and green at this time of year.

These are lovely little extra treats! I hope they flower soon before the cold weather comes around....though it may yet go back to being warm and sunny.

They just don't give up do they? (or maybe they want to be nasturtium pesto?)

I planted Nasturtiums last year and have had them flower all through winter much to my surprise, along with a beautiful lipstick pink Geranium, the colors together were stunning and a welcome sight during the dull grey days. I just realised tho that your winters are a lot colder than ours....however they may be magical ones :)
